Take your skills to the next level with Wilderness Survival Skills Classes! These skill classes are designed for ages 9 and up with little-to-no-experience required. Want to learn how to use a compass, make a trail, or use a pocketknife? Join Gayle Gone Feral in her element of outdoor education for these ultimate skill sessions for learners of all skill abilities.
Skill classes take place entirely outside in the woods, so please dress according to the weather. These 90 minute classes focus heavily on safety practices and hands-on skill training. The off-grid location is equipped with a composting toilet, handwashing station, and drinking water. Classes will be held from 5-6:30 pm and include a 1/4 mile hike to and from the outdoor learning space. Parents of minors are encouraged to stay and observe or wander and take in the beautiful private, wooded setting.

Wilderness Survival Skills Classes cost $35 per learner per class and include a copy of Gayle Gone Feral's Venturing Into The Wild pdf guide to help you prepare for spending time outside in the woods (a $20 value!).

In-Person Skill Workshops by Gayle Gone Feral teach the beginner learner basic skills for wilderness exploration. These simple, life-long skills, build a foundation based on safety and invite the learner to enhance and master the craft.

The Wilderness Survival Skills Course introduces important skills and safety guidelines to help learners feel confident while exploring nature. These flexible courses are designed to spark interest and engage learners in the hands-on application of skills learned throughout the course.
Topics include but are not limited to
Preparing for the Wilderness, Wild Encounters, First Aid, Wild Medicine, Navigation, Pocketknives, Campfires, Knots, Shelter Building, Tracking, Foraging, and complete the course with a Skill Day Challenge.
Intro To The Wild focuses on keeping the learner and their surroundings safe while venturing in nature. Topics include outdoor ethics, how to dress & pack, safe handling of critters, gathering plants, what to do if lost, and whistle communications.
Wayfinding I teaches basic compass skills including handling, reading, and locating cardinal & ordinal points. Use these skills to explore land maps and locate treasure!
Wayfinding II explores the compass further by discovering its parts, finding and following bearings, and a wayfinding challenge that is sure to get learners moving.
Pocket Knives I focuses on knife safety, teaching knife anatomy, the safety circle, and how to open, close, use, pass, and care for a pocket knife. Please do not bring a knife to this workshop. Practice knives will be provided.
Pocket Knives II begins a journey into whittling by exploring ways to use the knife for crafting. Must be 9+ wit
Pocket Knives I focuses on knife safety, teaching knife anatomy, the safety circle, and how to open, close, use, pass, and care for a pocket knife. Please do not bring a knife to this workshop. Practice knives will be provided.
Pocket Knives II begins a journey into whittling by exploring ways to use the knife for crafting. Must be 9+ with knife experience to register. A pocket knife that is familiar to the learner is required for this workshop.
First Aid I introduces the first aid kit, Check-Call-Care procedure (© American Red Cross), and how to treat common injuries that happen while exploring (ie. scrapes, stings, falls).
First Aid II delves into plant medicine and includes identifying, safe gathering, and methods of application.
Campfires I begins with fire safety practices, woodpile construction, common builds, sourcing and crafting fire starters (both natural and handmade), and extinguishing fires.
Campfires II is designed for ages 9+ and focuses on fire-lighting, crafting fire starters, preparing fires for various purposes, and an intro to cooking over a fire (beyond the marshmallow). Share a warm snack with us!
From the Co-Creator and Executive Director of Life Cycles Nature School comes Nature School Pop-Up Days! These family-oriented events with content designed for ages 6-12 with include seasonal topics about the natural world around us.
Nature School Pop-Up Days will take place on the 3rd Thursday from May through November, from 10 am-1 pm in Vicksburg, Michigan, near S. Sprinkle Rd and E TU Ave. Registration and payment are required for attendance. These 3/4 day adventures will take place entirely outside and feature a different topic each day. Each event will start and end with a hike, a lesson in an outdoor classroom, hands-on activities, a picnic lunch, and self-guided exploration time in a beautiful private, off-grid setting. Please note: we will meet in all weather, with the exception of thunderstorms or extreme temperatures, so please dress appropriately.
Each Nature School Day will have it's own, unique topic which coincides with changes in our natural world. While I don't anticipate many changes, topics are subject to change without notice.
